Arkansas Times

The Client

Arkansas Times is the state’s premier alternative weekly newspaper covering Arkansas politics and culture.

The Challenge

Like many news publications taking their printed wares online, Arkansas Times faced a three-pronged challenge of displaying a huge amount of content on the home page; integrating advertisements into the design without alienating readers; and allowing multiple Web-challenged editors to write, review, approve and publish articles to the site simultaneously (all while keeping the site visually attractive and easy to navigate).

The Solution

To meet the Arkansas Times’ needs, Softwyre designed a clean, modern-looking Web site that presents a wide array of content in a well-organized fashion and included plenty of space for online advertising. Equally important was a backend system—called Newswyre—that enabled multiple writers to edit and post news articles concurrently. Other Newswyre Web 2.0 features on the site include news articles with user comments, blogs, polls, streaming video, audio clips, entertainment listings and content syndication (RSS feeds).

The Results

Arkansas Times has been using Newswyre for more than four years to publish its weekly paper on the Web. Since the site redesign launched in 2007, Editor Max Brantley’s “Arkansas Blog” has become one of the most popular blogs—and online news sources— in the state. The Arkansas Blog gets so many page views per day that the publication has sold more advertising online than in its printed broadsheet. Additionally, ArkTimes.com was named “Best Web Design” by the Arkansas Press Association in its 2008 newspaper contest, competing against larger daily publications from around the state.
